EV Charging Cost in Nepal 2026

What it costs to charge an electric car or scooter at home and at public chargers, from the Nepal Electricity Authority tariff, with the cost of a full charge for popular EVs.

Charging an EV at home in Nepal costs Rs 9.50 a unit on NEA's domestic tariff up to 250 units a month and Rs 11 above that. A full charge of a 50 kWh car battery costs about Rs. 522 at home and about Rs. 680 at a public charger, where the most a station may charge on NEA's EV tariff is Rs 12.36 a unit in normal hours.

That works out to about Rs. 1.78 per km for a typical electric car, against Rs. 13.33 per km for a 15 km per litre petrol car at today's petrol price of Rs 200 a litre.

NEA home electricity tariff per unit

Single-phase domestic tariff, Rs per unit and the monthly minimum charge for each meter size. Each block of units is charged at its own rate; the minimum charge is the one of the highest block reached. Bills exclude VAT.

Public charging station rates

NEA sells electricity to charging stations on a separate "other transport" tariff, and the ERC order caps what a station may add on top at 20% per unit. Peak 17:00 to 23:00, off-peak 23:00 to 05:00, normal 05:00 to 17:00.

Peak (5 pm to 11 pm)Rs 11.70Rs 14.04
Off-peak (11 pm to 5 am)Rs 5.15Rs 6.18

Rates on NEA's no-demand-charge EV tariff. Stations on the demand tariff pay Rs 220 per kVA a month plus Rs 8.9 a unit. Charging stations for public transport (buses, Safa tempos) have a lower tariff. Neither NEA nor private networks publish one retail price, so these are ceilings, not the price at a given charger.

Worked examples

  • 50 kWh car, empty to full, at home (household already at 150 units a month): 55 units from the wall at Rs 9.50 = Rs. 522.
  • Same car at a public charger, normal hours: 55 units x Rs 12.36 = Rs. 680.
  • A month of driving, about 1,300 to 1,400 km (200 kWh into the battery, 220 units from the wall): the household goes from 150 to 370 units, so 100 units at Rs 9.50, 120 at Rs 11 and a Rs 50 higher minimum charge: Rs. 2,320, or Rs 10.55 a unit on average.
  • 3 kWh electric scooter: 3.3 units at Rs 9.50 = Rs. 31 for a full charge.
  • Cost per km: an electric car doing 6.5 km per kWh costs Rs. 1.78 per km; a petrol car at 15 km per litre costs Rs. 13.33 per km at Rs 200 a litre.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in Nepal?
NEA's domestic tariff charges Rs 9.50 a unit from 51 to 250 units a month and Rs 11 above 250 units. A 50 kWh car battery from empty takes about 55 units from the wall, about Rs. 522 for a typical home, so charging every month for 1,300 to 1,400 km adds about Rs. 2,320 to the electricity bill.
What is the EV charging price per unit at public stations in Nepal?
ERC's tariff lets a charging station on NEA's EV tariff charge at most 20% above its NEA rate. On the no-demand EV tariff that is Rs 12.36 a unit in normal hours, Rs 14.04 at peak (5 pm to 11 pm) and Rs 6.18 off-peak (11 pm to 5 am). Stations do not publish one common price, so check at the charger.
What is the NEA electricity tariff per unit?
For a 15 A home meter: units 1 to 20 Rs 4, 21 to 30 Rs 6.50, 31 to 50 Rs 8, 51 to 250 Rs 9.50 and above 250 Rs 11 a unit, plus a monthly minimum charge of Rs 50 to Rs 175. Each block is charged at its own rate. The tariff is the ERC order of 2078, still in force.
How much does it cost to charge an electric scooter in Nepal?
A 3 kWh scooter battery costs about Rs. 31 to charge fully at home; at 30 km per kWh that is about Rs. 0.39 per km.
Is charging an EV cheaper than petrol in Nepal?
Yes, by about 7 times. A typical electric car costs about Rs. 1.78 per km on home charging; a petrol car doing 15 km per litre costs Rs. 13.33 per km at today's Rs 200 a litre.
Is there a special EV tariff for home charging in Nepal?
No. Home charging is billed on the normal domestic tariff. Three-phase domestic connections pay a flat seasonal rate (Rs 10.50 a unit from Ashadh to Kartik, Rs 11.50 from Mangsir to Jestha), which ERC set partly with EV charging in mind.
