Revolutionizing Nepal’s EV Market: Geely’s Advanced Short Blade Battery Technology
Nepal’s electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing rapid growth, with battery technology emerging as the key consideration for buyers. The battery is more than just a power source—it is the core of an EV, influencing performance, range, durability, cost, and overall user experience.
Surge in EV Adoption
In recent years, Nepal has witnessed a dramatic increase in EV sales, with annual growth rates soaring up to 180 percent. Electric vehicles now account for nearly 75 percent of all automobile imports. As more consumers transition from traditional petrol and diesel vehicles to electric SUVs, the focus on battery safety, longevity, and charging speed has intensified.
Introducing Geely’s Short Blade Battery
On June 27, 2024, in Hangzhou, Geely Auto Group unveiled its innovative self-developed Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Short Blade EV battery technology. This advanced battery is engineered to deliver superior safety, enhanced structural integrity, improved energy density, efficient space utilization, flexible design, and rapid charging capabilities.
Unmatched Safety Features
The Short Blade battery incorporates robust, heat-resistant materials and Geely’s proprietary Self-Fusing technology. In the event of a severe impact or puncture, an internal aluminum layer automatically creates an insulating barrier, preventing short circuits and mitigating the risk of thermal runaway.
Geely subjected the battery to rigorous testing that exceeded industry standards. In one test, eight steel needles were simultaneously inserted into the battery cell for an hour without causing smoke, fire, or explosion. The battery also passed a rifle bullet penetration test without igniting. Additional tests included seawater immersion, extreme cold, heavy load rolling, side collisions, underbody scraping, and fire exposure—all of which the battery endured without thermal runaway, fire, or structural failure.
Exceptional Longevity and Performance
Designed for long-term use, the Short Blade battery can withstand up to 3,500 charging cycles, equivalent to approximately one million kilometers of driving. For a family that drives about 20,000 kilometers annually, this means the battery could last up to 50 years. This extended lifespan helps preserve resale value and reduce environmental impact.
The battery also excels in cold weather conditions. At minus 30 degrees Celsius, it retains over 90 percent of its capacity, outperforming many conventional batteries. Even at minus 25 degrees Celsius, it maintains more than 92 percent efficiency and can charge to 90 percent in about 20 minutes without requiring additional heating systems.
Impressive Performance of the Geely EX5
The Geely EX5, equipped with a 160 kW motor, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds. With an 11 kW AC charger, the battery charges from 10 percent to 100 percent in approximately 6 hours. Utilizing a 100 kW DC fast charger, it can charge from 30 percent to 80 percent in merely 20 minutes. According to Mr. Shrestha, the EX5’s robust battery performance, impressive range, and rapid charging capabilities have made it a favorite among Nepali buyers.
Built for Nepal’s Challenging Terrain
Nepal’s roads present unique challenges, including steep hills, rough gravel roads, and occasional flooding. The EX5’s battery is specifically designed to thrive in these conditions. It features a reinforced grid-frame structure, a three-layer bottom guard plate, and Cell-to-Body (CTB) integration for added protection. The battery has been tested under heavy loads and stone impacts without sustaining damage. Even prolonged exposure to seawater has not affected its performance, making it ideal for flood-prone regions.
A Benchmark in Safety and Durability
With its stringent safety standards, extended lifespan, robust performance in extreme weather, and sophisticated structural design, Geely’s Short Blade battery technology positions the Geely EX5 as one of the safest and most durable electric SUVs available in Nepal and globally.
